Call for Trainees "Training in Translational Research on Cardiovascular Disease"

 

Kathmandu University, School of Medical Sciences is seeking qualified trainees interested in translational research on cardiovascular health. This advanced training is an important part of the "Translational Research Capacity Building to Address Cardiovascular Diseases in Nepal" program, a training grant from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), USA. This four-year (September 2017-August 2021) project aims to build national capacity to lead translational research in cardiovascular disease (CVD) by creating and training a multi-sectoral, multi-disciplinary team; building partnerships with US universities (University of Washington, University of Wisconsin, Harvard University) and regional institutions (Public Health Foundation of India, Sun-Yat-Sen University); systematically assessing national needs; and developing an actionable translational research plan. A translational research is defined as research to identify implementation strategies to enhance sustainable uptake of proven effective interventions into routine clinical practice and community based settings in order to maximize population health impact.

 

This training will build the capacity of an early career researcher to be a leader in translational research for CVD prevention and management in Nepal. The trainee will be working part-time starting from day of appointment to August 2021 with limited working hours of ten hours per week. The trainees will receive online training on Leadership and Management, Human Subjects Research, and Implementation Science. In addition, the trainees will participate in various onsite trainings on epidemiologic methods, health system strengthening, health policy, qualitative research methods, and grant writing. The on-site rigorous course will be carried out for as residential trainings not exceeding than a week every year at Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences, Dhulikhel Hospital, Kavre. The trainings will be scheduled as feasibility of international consultant trainers. The trainees will then be matched with national expert and an expert from the partner institutions, receive individual mentorship. Furthermore, the trainee will be involved in research activities to assess national needs on CVD prevention and management and publish scientific papers in peer-review journals. At the end of the training, the candidate will receive a certificate on CVD translational research from Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences. The program will fund all training costs including international courses. It will also cover travel and logistics during the courses in Dhulikhel Hospital.

 

We are seeking six (atleast 50% female) motivated Nepali citizens who are currently employed under Department of Health Service or other divisions of Ministry of Health and Population, Government of Nepal and committed to pursuing a future career in translational research on cardiovascular health in Nepal. The candidate must have a Master's or doctoral degree in sciences such as a Master of Public Health, or a Master's in Nursing, an MD in Cardiology /Internal medicine /Community Medicine /General Practice, or other health related discipline (Social Science, health policy, health system, leadership and governance) with interest experience in health research. Prior experience in cardiovascular disease research and previous publication history is preferred. Female candidates are highly encouraged to apply.

2. Applicant must be a current employee of Department of Health Service or other divisions of Ministry of Health and Population, Government of Nepal
3. Applicants must have a Master's or doctoral degree in health science such as Master of Public Health or Masters in Nursing or MD in Cardiology /Internal medicine/ Community Medicine / General Practice or other health related disciplines (social science, health policy, health system, leadership and governance) with interest and experience in health research.
4. Applicants must be committed to invest the required time and build a career in CVD translational research.
