Introduction
Dhulikhel Medical Institute (DMI) was established in 1998 with the joint initiatives of Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel hospital. It is an autonomous non-profit making training institute involved in producing quality and competent human resources in both clinical and academic filed of health care delivery in the country. In order to produce competent health professionals in the country, the institute has adopted holistic educational approach to meet the needs of Nepal in primary health care fields. The educational approaches practiced at DMI are:
- Student Centered Learning approach
- Problem Based and Integrated Educational approach
- Systematic and community focused health service education programme
- Relevant health education as need of Nepal
There is a strong clinical component guided by notion of the needs of different level of care with the themes of health care: caring, ethics, diversity and critical thinking. Human resources for health (HRH) are prepared with the knowledge, skills, abilities, values and attitudes to practice in variety of health care settings in a changing heath system.
Developing self-sustained institution with training and research capacity and support health sector development, both in its concept and strategy is indeed arduous task. Retrospective view garners its own success story in the evolution of model training institution through joint venture of Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel hospital supported by Dhulikhel community. The institute is the best example of successful partnership of three components each reinforced the other: academic institution, service delivery institution and the consumers/owners. With academic guidance of Kathmandu University and utilizing health care facility and resources of Dhulikhel Hospital, DMI has been producing human resources for health through training, meanwhile, trying to acquire substantial research capacity and to support the primary health care strategy of the government.
INSTITUTIONAL OBJECTIVES
- To produce different levels of human resources for health care need for meeting the national aspirations and goals.
- To perform various research and development work to strengthen National Health Service and tackle current health problems.
- To offer various types of training sponsored courses, conducting problem-oriented research and offering health services to the community.
COURSES OFFERED
All programmes are of three years duration. Students in the program study theory courses, laboratory exercises, hospital clinical practices, community health practices and projects.
